Attachment not visible in Outlook, OWA but still there. [Exchange 2007]
Hi all. This one's a real head scratcher. I'll detail the setup first. We have Exchange 2007 SP1 on a single server. No antispam installed and ForeFront security. The mail server co-existed with an Exchange 2003 server for a couple of months but that one has now been shut down and the 2007 server handles all e-mail now. The clients run Office 2003 SP3 as well as Office 2007 RTM. Now, here's the tricky part. When we recieve mail from person A no attachments are seen in Outlook or OWA, even though these are ordinary (?) Word-files. When we access these mails in a mobile phone the attachments are there. Word files are always visible otherwise, no matter the interface (Outlook, OWA or EAS). If the e-mail is forwarded to a person in another company running Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2007 the attachments are visible. If the e-mail is forwarded toa person in another company running Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2007 the attachments are not visible. If another person from the same company as person A sends us the same attachments they are visible. Person A claims that we are the only ones having problems and that we need to solve the issue. We claim that the problems lies with the sender as we normally have no issues with Word attachments. We are this close to opening a ticket with Microsoft (and this is probably a bug they'd like to fix) but we need to resolve this ASAP so any and all feedback is appreciated - no matter how silly it might seem. TIA.

Clarify: attachment disappeared if the mail comes from person A [person A is an external partner], it shows only in OMA. Another user who belongs to the same company as first person A can send the attachment normally. If forward issued mail to an ex2k3 mailbox, attachment appears; if forward to an ex2k7 mailbox, attachment disappears, right? Based on my experience, the issue might occur in various situations. Either in the sender's side, recipient's side, Exchange side or network, please get the following questions answer to narrow down the cause: 1. Does the symptom only happen from person A to your company, you have not same symptom with any other internal and external user? 2. This person A can send attachment normally to other ex2k7/ol2k7 organization? Give it a try 3. Do all attachments cannot get through no matter which type of file it is? Can you let A to attach a basic txt file for testing? Known cause: received mail may be corrupted in the message body. Some programs installed on the sender PC filtered outbound mails. However, IE have the strong error correction function; the attachment might able to show in IE. That could be the reason why the issue does not occur on mobile phone

Hi, We are having a similar problem with attachments not visible in Outlook 2003. So far we have had 2 incidents reported and this is onlya problem withexternal emails. We are running Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 clients. Users can see the attachment in Outlook 2007 and OWA 2007 but not in Outlook 2003. Let me know if you need additional info. Thank you.

I recently ran into this same problem using MS Outlook 2003 from our Exchange Server. Anemail was sent to me from a Mac user with 3 jpg attachments that became embedded as thumbnail images in the message. The only way I could see the images from Outlook was to right click and save them to my workstation (which they would only do asbmp format) and then open them. I tried forwarding the message to myself but the problem remained. I forwarded them to a user in our network that had Outlook 2007 using POP mail from a server other than our exchange server and they sawthe images as attachments. I was also able to open them as attachments from my smartphone (Windows Mobile 6.1) using Mobile Outlook synched with my exchange server. This same user has sent a second email with attachments and thisphenomenonoccurred again. Thinking it was something they are doing I inquired and was told that no one else they send attachments to has complained. Any help on this would be appreciated.

The issue, "Attachments not displaying when you use Outlook 2003 to open an email message that contains an attachment", is documented in the following knowledge base article, <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930468>. If you already have SP1 for Exchange 2007 installed, you will need to install Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2007 to fix the issue. The following article, "Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007", <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935999/en-us>, describes issues that are fixed by applying Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007 . To download and apply this Update Rollup, follow this link, <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949870/>

We are seeing the same problem here...We have an Exchange Server 2007 environment on SP1Both of the users below are on our local domain nothing is from external parties so the email is only going through our Exchange Server. We have a user who sends an email using outlook 2007 with an excel spreadsheet attached. The recipient of this email will receive the email also has Outlook 2007. The email shows up in the inbox with the paperclip icon. User opens email and to his dismay the attachment is not there. Also if he right-clicks on the paperclip icon the submenu for attachments is not there. If he logs into OWA the attachment is there for download. We have yet to find a resolution for this.

Hello. Just wanted to post my experience with a VERY similar issue I had and the resolution. Exchange 2007 (fully updated however), Outlook 2003, Attachments not visible for only 2/300 people in our company. User could not see some attachments (specifically attachments from an internal scanning unit). Evenwhen the email was sent to someone else who could see it, and then fwd'd back to that user, the attachment would not show up at all. It came down to the filename of document.pdf. If I sent a brand new email to any of the problem users with that file name, the attachment would not show. Any other file name would show fine. On a hunch I dug through the registry and navigated to the following key to find the hidden outlook temp files folder (OLK): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security (this key is specific to Outlook 2003. The location is different for other version of Office/outlook) I thencopied and pasted the pathto the folder that the reg key pointed to into explorer(which cannot be browsed to - you have to know the actual path), backed up all data in that folder (there were hundreds of "document.pdf(1) document.pdf(2), etc" in there. After backup, I blew all files out of that folder and restarted outlook and all was well. The issues appears to have come from the fact that the used had recieved and opened so many of that file name over a year or so that the temp folder was just at capacity with revision of that file and could not make anymore room. Hope this helps someone. MCSE, CCNP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;961940 We are starting to see this issue in our environment. It appears to be an issue with how the attachment is added to the email by the sender.Michael Bell, Forum Moderator, MCT, MCSA, MCSE

I had this issue when we upgraded to Outlook 2010, several clients responded to say there was no attachment on my emails although the attachment was clearly there. I believe the issue is that we were using a newer version of Outlook and the files are somehow incompatible with older versions causing the files to be hidden or displayed in a format they are unable to open. I noticed that when the emails were sent through our web based emails they sent fine so I changed the text format from html to plain text and since then we haven't had any complaints of missing attachments so it appears to have solved the problem for us.
